An original oil painting created for Harlequin Books, published in October 1990.
This painting was created using traditional illustration techniques.
-professional models were photographed, using 35mm slide film
-sketches were completed using the photo reference for art director approval. (original sketchs are lost)
-final painting was created using the approved sketch and references, painted with oils on gessoed Masonite
I can't recall many of the details surrounding the story of this illustration, but it was typical of my work at that time. The painting was brought up using many thin oil washes over a detailed pencil drawing. This technique was similar to a Watercolor style, but using oils as the medium. The "spattered" edge of the background was done with an oil and water technique; thin oil paint mixed with water caused the separation of mediums into an abstract (and almost uncontrollable) effect...perfect to underscore the mystic quality of story.
